Clinical:
Choanal atresia refers to congenital obstruction of the posterior nasopharyx. It is unilateral in 65% of cases and usually presents with respiratory distress while feeding. As the newborn is an obligate nose breather, if the atresia is bilateral (35%), the child will develop respiratory distress almost immediately after birth. The atresia may be bony (90%) or membranous (10%). Choanal atresia is associated with CHARGE syndrome: Coloboma, cardiac defects, CNS anomalies, genital hypoplasia, and ear deformities.
