CAD shines in detecting large nonsolid pulmonary nodules

Computer-aided detection (CAD) software can outperform both a senior thoracic radiologist and a resident trained in chest imaging for detecting nonsolid pulmonary nodules larger than 3 mm, according to a study from France. The results support the use of a CAD system as a second observer for both nonsolid and solid nodules detected on CT studies, the researchers said.

ORLANDO - Healthcare information technology's greatest potential lies in reducing medical errors, cutting the cost of care, and easing human suffering, but it needs to be controlled locally, according to Michael Leavitt, Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In his keynote address at the 2008 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting, Leavitt discussed uniform national IT standards that can be promoted and implemented locally.
