The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) plans to once again delay the distribution of data from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES).
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) registry is a database that matches NPI numbers to legacy identifiers (such as unique physician identifier numbers, or UPINs). CMS has instructed healthcare providers to submit changes no later than August 20, 2007.
The NPI registry was to be operational by June 28, 2007, but distribution was delayed to August 1, 2007. The new deadline for release of the data will be September 4, 2007.
