Los Angeles-based ultrasound AI developer iCardio.ai has received a $1 million prize from the Roddenberry Foundation.
The Roddenberry Prize supports groundbreaking ventures that have the potential to profoundly impact the world and would allow more people to "live long and prosper," according to the Roddenberry Foundation.
“Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned a future where heart disease is a thing of the past. Now, his family is funding what may become a real-life version of the Star Trek tricorder,” the foundation said in a news release.
iCardio.ai’s technology includes a suite of cardiac ultrasound AI tools for use with handheld, whole-body point-of-care ultrasound probes. The tools automate key echocardiographic measurements of the heart that can help detect valvular diseases, like aortic stenosis, and provide image quality assessments.
The award will enable iCardio.ai to scale its technology to reach more people, particularly those in regions where cardiovascular care is lacking, the company said.
