Complex cardiothoracic surgery benefits from 3D imaging
By
N. Shivapriya
Three-dimensional CT images are more than just pretty pictures when it comes to cardiothoracic surgery. Viewing 3D real-time images along with 2D ones can alter surgical plans for complex cases, and even increase a surgeon's confidence in the plan, according to a new study by researchers from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Automated image alignment ramps up report throughput
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
ORLANDO, FL - An important component of tracking disease progression is the comparison of patient images from older studies with their latest images, especially in CT, MR, and PET exams. Image matching is time-consuming work, however, and poor alignment can lead to uncertainty and error on the part of the interpreting radiologist, according to a presentation this morning at the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology (SCAR).
