Do more CT scans lead to more kidney surgeries?
The higher the number of chest or abdominal CT exams in a hospital referral region, the greater the probability that patients will undergo a renal procedure, likely due to the incidental detection of renal masses, according to a study published online December 26 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Doctors who order fewer CTPA scans detect more PE
Turns out that less really is more. Canadian researchers are reporting that doctors who order fewer CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) scans for pulmonary embolism (PE) actually have a higher rate of successfully detecting the condition, according to a letter published online January 8 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Gadolinium in fetuses almost entirely cleared via placenta
Only trace amounts of the gadolinium administered to pregnant monkeys cross the placenta and enter the fetuses, and most of this gadolinium quickly returns back to the mother's bloodstream for excretion, according to research published in the January issue of Radiology.

3D-printed model reproduces real prostate properties
Researchers from Minnesota have used a 3D printer to generate patient-specific prostate models that offer the dimensions and physical properties of a real prostate while also mimicking its tactile sensation and pliability, according to an article published online December 6 in Advanced Materials Technologies.

3D printing aids simulation of CT- and MR-guided ablation
With the availability of a 3D printing material that's detectable on both CT and MRI, radiologists can simulate and practice complex image-guided cryoablation of head, neck, and spinal tumors using 3D-printed models, according to research presented at RSNA 2017.

How often are lung nodules missed on CAC scoring scans?
If an incidental lung nodule is present on a CT coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring scan, how often is that nodule actually detected and worked up? Not as often as one might expect, according to researchers who analyzed the reasons why nodules might be missed in a presentation at RSNA 2017.

FFR-CT algorithm guides management of revascularization
A deep-learning algorithm that analyzes fractional flow reserve CT (FFR-CT) scans was able to determine almost as well as invasive FFR which patients suspected of having coronary artery disease should be referred for revascularization. The finding could lead to better, less-invasive care, according to a presentation at RSNA 2017.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

Could AI scoring help with managing DCIS?
Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan in a 28-year-old premenopausal woman shows an incidentally detected solid-appearing left ovarian lesion (solid arrow) anterior to the uterus (U), associated with trace ascites in the right adnexa and cul de sac (dashed arrows). At pathologic analysis, this was shown to be ovarian dysgerminoma. Two readers misdiagnosed this lesion, one as a leiomyoma and one as an ovarian fibroma.
