ARRS: Density reporting laws not enough to boost breast US
HONOLULU - Rates of breast ultrasound (US) use have slowly trended upward in states that have adopted breast density notification laws, but this growth has yet to cross the threshold of statistical significance, according to a presentation at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) annual meeting.

ARRS: Cinematic rendering comes to breast ultrasound
HONOLULU - Researchers from California produced photorealistic 3D models of the breast by applying cinematic rendering to 3D transmission ultrasound images. The potential clinical applications of these models were the subject of a Wednesday presentation at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) annual meeting.

ARRS: Should CT lung screening programs fear flu season?
HONOLULU - Is CT lung cancer screening less effective during flu season? Probably not, but screening eligible smokers for respiratory illnesses such as the flu before ordering the exam sharply reduced the need for downstream testing, according to a presentation at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) annual meeting.

ARRS: Use of CT angiography surges for carotid imaging
HONOLULU - The utilization rates of all imaging modalities for noninvasive carotid imaging have declined over the past decade with one exception -- CT angiography (CTA). CTA use for carotid imaging has grown by nearly 700%, according to a presentation on Monday at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) meeting.

ARRS: Radiologists foresee bright future for 3D printing
HONOLULU - What are the predominant applications of 3D printing in healthcare, and what lies ahead for the technology? Radiologists from the U.S., Canada, and South Korea envisioned a bright future for medical 3D printing in a Sunday featured course at the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) 2019 meeting.

CT lung screening isn't reaching areas that need it most
The availability of CT lung cancer screening facilities favors U.S. regions that have relatively fewer individuals at risk of lung cancer. This suboptimal distribution may be contributing to the slow adoption of screening among eligible smokers, according to an article published in the May issue of Chest.

Why are doctors overriding CT guidelines for PE patients?
As much as 37% of CT pulmonary angiography exams for patients with a pulmonary embolism (PE) were ordered against guideline recommendations at a New York hospital, according to a new study. Researchers investigated the underlying reason for this discordance in an April 30 article published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Images of a 39-year-old who underwent screening mammography. Right craniocaudal (left) and mediolateral oblique (middle) views from preoperative mammography show suspicious grouped fine pleomorphic calcifications (arrows). After biopsy showed ductal carcinoma of situ (DCIS), patient underwent breast-conserving surgery, yielding final diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ (intermediate grade, hormone receptor positive). (Right) Screenshot of an output of a commercial AI tool applied to preoperative mammography. AI detected right breast lesion with score of 95% on both views (concentric colored circles). Present study’s reviewing radiologist deemed AI marking to correspond with site of DCIS.

(B) Transverse ultrasound image shows a 2.3-cm hypoechoic mass (arrows) with calcifications. (C) Axial contrast-enhanced fat-saturated T1-weighted MRI scan shows an irregular, heterogeneously enhancing mass (arrow) in the left breast, adjacent to the operation site. The final pathologic examination confirmed recurrent invasive ductal carcinoma.
