Radiologist scrutinized for 'herd immunity' COVID theory
A radiologist tapped by President Donald Trump as an advisor on the COVID-19 pandemic was the subject of an August 31 profile in the Washington Post. The article focused on a controversial "herd immunity" theory espoused by Dr. Scott Atlas to build up a resistance to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

CMS postpones 'appropriate use' mandate past 2021
Clinicians ordering advanced imaging scans like CT, MRI, and PET in the Medicare system will no longer have to use appropriate use criteria (AUC) and decision support starting in 2021. On August 10, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said it was extending the testing period for AUC through the end of 2021.

Holographic anatomy program shifts gears after COVID-19
A program that uses holograms to teach human anatomy at Case Western Reserve University didn't miss a beat when COVID-19 hit in March. It distributed nearly 200 holographic headsets to students so they could continue learning at home, according to a talk at the Society for MR Radiographers & Technologists virtual meeting.

A 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with ER-positive (Allred score 8) ILC in her right breast. Ultrasound and MRI found prominent lymph nodes in right axillary level I area, diagnosed as metastasis on ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. F-18 FES-PET/CT showed a positive mass in right breast (white arrow; SUVmax, 5.6) and multiple F-18 FES–positive lymph nodes in right axillary level I, II, and II/III junction areas (red arrows; SUVmax, up to 12.2). In addition, a small F-18 FES-positive lymph node was observed in the right second internal mammary area (red circles; SUVmax, 1.8). However, biopsy could not be performed because it was too small and not visible on ultrasound; the clinician decided to include internal mammary lymph node in treatment field for adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient underwent lumpectomy with ALN dissection, with five metastases being identified in 13 lymph nodes dissected, and is scheduled to receive adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy.

Abbreviated MRI suffices in imaging dense breasts
By Amerigo Allegretto
Abbreviated MRI produces images of a comparable quality to that of multiparametric MRI in patients with dense breasts.
May 20, 2025
Abbreviated axial MRI images show a 7-mm irregular mass with irregular margin (arrows) in the right upper inner quadrant with early rapid enhancement (BIRADS 4). The participant was recalled and underwent an MRI-guided vacuum-assisted biopsy that showed sclerosing adenosis with microcalcifications and usual ductal hyperplasia and focal apocrine metaplasia. On the full-protocol images (not shown), the lesion was T2-weighted hypointense and showed diffusion restriction and washout kinetics in the delayed phase, characteristics that would not have reversed the decision to recall the participant.

FAPI-SPECT/CT shows promise diagnosing gastrointestinal cancer
By Will Morton
FAPI-SPECT/CT is comparable to FDG-PET/CT for detecting lesions in patients with gastrointestinal cancer, a study shows.
May 19, 2025
Representative F-18 FDG-PET/CT and Tc-99m FAPI-SPECT/CT scans for five study patients with gastrointestinal cancer. FDG-PET/CT and FAPI-SPECT/CT images show that uptake occurred in metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) (patient number 50, D) and bone metastases (patient number 33, C). FAPI-SPECT/CT outperformed FDG-PET/CT in detecting liver metastases (patient number 3, A; and 15,B) and peritoneal spread metastases (patient number 27, E). Red arrows indicate foci additionally found by FAPI-SPECT/CT.
