FAPI-PET outperforms FDG-PET in diagnosing pancreatic cancer
F-18 FAPI-PET/CT is superior to F-18 FDG-PET/CT for diagnosing and staging patients with pancreatic cancer.

PET/CT predicts brain tumors in melanoma patients
PET/CT scans have the potential to predict brain metastasis in melanoma patients.
January 3, 2024
A 49-year-old patient with primary clinical stage III melanoma underwent F-18 FDG-PET. The primary tumor Breslow thickness was 6.5 mm. On initial F-18 FDG-PET images, this patient had a high SUVmax (52), resulting in limited survival with the occurrence of brain metastasis in the first year of follow-up (horizontal arrow). Notably, during the course of the treatment, the patient underwent surgical removal of the primary tumor as well as lymph node dissection, followed by neoadjuvant radiotherapy and immunotherapy. PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma
PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.
December 22, 2023
A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients
In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.

FES-PET shows promise staging women with invasive lobular cancer

Invasive lobular cancer is the second most common type of breast cancer and is difficult to detect, but FES-PET could aid in surgical staging.

A 58-year-old woman was diagnosed with ER-positive (Allred score 8) ILC in her right breast. Ultrasound and MRI found prominent lymph nodes in right axillary level I area, diagnosed as metastasis on ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. F-18 FES-PET/CT showed a positive mass in right breast (white arrow; SUVmax, 5.6) and multiple F-18 FES–positive lymph nodes in right axillary level I, II, and II/III junction areas (red arrows; SUVmax, up to 12.2). In addition, a small F-18 FES-positive lymph node was observed in the right second internal mammary area (red circles; SUVmax, 1.8). However, biopsy could not be performed because it was too small and not visible on ultrasound; the clinician decided to include internal mammary lymph node in treatment field for adjuvant radiotherapy. The patient underwent lumpectomy with ALN dissection, with five metastases being identified in 13 lymph nodes dissected, and is scheduled to receive adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
