Thin slices, quality assurance improve calcium scoring

Radiologists in the Netherlands have found that using thinner slices in CT coronary calcium scanning yields more accurate results, especially at lower calcium volumes. Meanwhile, a German team optimized exam protocols across manufacturers, and succeeded in lowering the dose while keeping noise constant.

Many experts suspect that calcified plaque still holds a secret or two about cardiovascular risk -- subtle trends, perhaps, that current tests cannot reliably track. The prognostic value of CT calcium assessment has been proven, of course, but the methods still need refining.
