Prototype MR unit offers fine spatial, temporal resolution -- sans magnet

Inexpensive, compact, and mobile are three words that are rarely associated with MRI. But researchers in California have designed an experimental MR system that uses optical atomic magnetometry instead of a superconducting magnet and cryogenics, which could one day lead to a new breed of portable MR units, as well as the ability to image in the presence of metal implants.

Breast MRI takes on CT in hepatic lesions and intraductal carcinoma

Two new studies have examined the role of MRI and CT in breast cancer and subsequent metastatic disease. Radiologists in New York City sought to find out whether MRI should be used to differentiate benign and malignant lesions in patients with indeterminate CT findings. And Japanese researchers pitted MRI against multidetector-row CT (MDCT) for determining the lesion margins for surgical removal. They found that one modality was superior to the other.
