CT assesses plaque composition, but with difficulty

Mean attenuation scores at multidetector-row CT show distinct and reliable differences in the composition of atherosclerotic plaques, far surpassing the capabilities of ultrasound, according to a new study from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). But on a 16-slice MDCT scanner, overlapping attenuation values still make it difficult to assign specific plaque composition types to specific tissue samples.

UAE with PVA microspheres yields sustained symptom improvement

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) microspheres were developed in response to the disadvantages of irregular PVA agents, such as clumping and size variability, explained Dr. Gary Siskin, who led a prospective multicenter trial that looked at uterine artery embolization (UAE) versus myomectomy. In the third arm of this large-scale UAE study, the researchers evaluated how these newer PVA agents faired in UAE, as well as how the procedure compared to myomectomy.
