Siemens, BrainLab bring intraoperative CT scanner to the U.S.

U.S. facilities are about to get their first look at a novel concept in intraoperative CT, thanks to a partnership between image-guided therapy firm BrainLab and Siemens Medical Solutions. The companies have developed an intraoperative CT system that slides into position for use during surgical procedures, eliminating the need to move patients out of the operating suite for additional imaging.

Tyco hit with lawsuit over gadolinium reaction

A Cleveland man who claims he developed nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) from an injection of gadolinium MRI contrast has filed a lawsuit against Tyco International of Pembroke, Bermuda, and two of its subsidiaries, Tyco Healthcare Group and Mallinckrodt of Hazelwood, MO.

Patients may misperceive sensitivity of second-trimester ultrasound

NEW YORK CITY - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that 68% of women who gave birth in 2002 received an ultrasound exam at some point in their pregnancy. But many women may also not grasp the limitations of second-trimester ultrasound exams, according to research from Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and Northwestern University in Chicago.

Radiographers equivalent to radiologists in VC study

Finding polyps may be a tough job, but radiologists aren't any better at it than radiographers, according to the results of a new virtual colonoscopy study by researchers from the Netherlands. The findings suggest that dedicated radiographers trained in reading VC exams can be as accurate as radiologists in evaluating the exams.

DTHI boosts US performance in hepatic imaging

NEW YORK CITY - A new dual-frequency nonlinear imaging mode called differential tissue harmonic imaging (DTHI) offers improvements over tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and fundamental ultrasound for hepatic applications, according to researchers from the U.S. and Taiwan. Dr. Flemming Forsberg presented the team's research Friday at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) meeting.
