Duke MMIL designs novel SPECT/CT system for 3D breast imaging

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC, are combining SPECT and CT technologies into a single device for 3D volumetric breast imaging to obtain both functional and anatomical information in one exam. The team recently presented its hybrid prototype system, along with results from its first patient study.

JAMA study: Coronary CTA poses substantial cancer risk in select patients

Sixty-four slice coronary CT angiography (CTA) forges ahead as the go-to imaging modality in coronary artery disease, but the diagnostic test carries a significant risk for radiation-induced cancer, especially in women and younger patients, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers scrutinize CTA for pulmonary embolism

More likely than not, a patient with unexplained shortness of breath or other symptom suggestive of pulmonary embolism (PE) will be sent for CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) to rule it out. CT is fast and it does the job when vessels are examined systematically, but its false-positive rate can be high when combined with a low clinical probability of PE. Recent studies have shed new light on the use of CT in cases of suspected PE.
