Breast MRI measures biologic significance of DCIS

The recurrence rate in women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) varies from 5% to 40%, and the progression and timing of DCIS has proved tricky. What's needed is a way to preoperatively characterize DCIS lesions, which would be helpful for surgical planning and also nonoperative treatments, according to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). They evaluated whether MRI could reliably capture the size and extent of DCIS, while also correlating imaging features with pathology.

How old is too old for a mammogram?
A recent study suggests that 75 may be an appropriate age limit for mammography to avoid overtreatment of breast cancer. Others argue that a woman's health should be the deciding factor in whether to continue annual mammograms. While the age debate continues, one thing is certain -- mammographers should take extra steps to ensure the comfort of older women who are screened so they will be inclined to return.
