Multivendor digital mammo project makes mark in Germany
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
Digital mammography is often deployed in a heterogeneous IT environment with different developers' RIS, PACS, and archive products interacting with the modality, presenting a host of integration concerns. A group of information systems administrators in Germany recently faced the challenge of bringing CR mammography online and discovered that successfully assimilating the modality into the enterprise is not just an issue of interfacing the technology.

Measuring breast's electromagnetic properties ups contrast
By
Shalmali Pal
The electromagnetic properties of breast tissue offer high contrast for depicting malignancies, and electromagnetic imaging can boost the contrast between normal tissue and abnormal findings, according to Dartmouth University-based researchers. But their prototype scanners still require fine-tuning before they'll be useful in a high-throughput clinical setting.

study pans CAD, draws attention and criticism

Breast studies: Persistence a must with noncompliant patients; race-based tissue density not a risk factor
By
Shalmali Pal
Compliance rates for diagnostic mammography and the effect of race on breast density are highlighted in two studies in the April issue of the
American Journal of Roentgenology
. While Michigan researchers looked at the costs associated with a system designed to encourage patients to return for additional imaging, a group in Massachusetts sought to determine if innate racial differences in breast density might explain differences in breast cancer risk.
