Both UAE, hysterectomy improve quality of life
By
Kate Madden Yee
Both uterine artery embolization (UAE) and hysterectomy improve health-related quality of life for women with uterine fibroids, making embolization a good alternative to hysterectomy, according to Dutch researchers. They conducted a multicenter trial of health-related quality of life outcomes for UAE and hysterectomy.

Breast MRI CAD doesn't improve accuracy due to poor DCIS detection
By
Kate Madden Yee
Current breast MR computer-aided detection (CAD) cannot improve radiologist accuracy in distinguishing malignant from benign MRI screen-detected lesions because of its poor DCIS detection sensitivity, according to researchers from Toronto. They evaluated the effect of MRI CAD on radiologists' sensitivity and specificity for breast lesions recommended for biopsy after MR screening in women with a high risk of breast cancer.

Study reinforces V/Q, PIOPED II guidelines for PE during pregnancy
By
Cynthia E. Keen

Boosting mammography volume requirement may jeopardize access
By
Kate Madden Yee
Under the Mammography Quality Standards Act, U.S. radiologists are required to read a minimum of 960 mammograms within a two-year period to be certified to interpret mammography. A push to raise this minimum has developed, with the belief that higher interpretation volumes bring increased accuracy. If the requirement were raised, however, some radiologists -- particularly those in rural settings -- would no longer read enough exams to stay certified, impacting patients' access to care, according to a new study.

Study finds that CAD improves mammography's sensitivity
By
Kate Madden Yee
A new study published online this week found that computer-aided detection (CAD) improves the sensitivity of mammography screening with only a small boost in the patient recall rate. The research offers a rebuttal to last year's
New England Journal of Medicine
study that found that CAD actually reduced the accuracy of breast screening centers that used it.
