Fetal entertainment ultrasounds draw patient interest

NEW YORK CITY - The increasing prevalence of fetal entertainment ultrasound studies has attracted concern over the possible misuse of scans performed for nonmedical purposes. But, at least in the experience of a research team from Salt Lake City, patients receiving these scans seem to be aware of their limitations and view them as an adjunct to their medical ultrasound exam.

Patients may misperceive sensitivity of second-trimester ultrasound

NEW YORK CITY - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that 68% of women who gave birth in 2002 received an ultrasound exam at some point in their pregnancy. But many women may also not grasp the limitations of second-trimester ultrasound exams, according to research from Stanford University in Stanford, CA, and Northwestern University in Chicago.

Interventionalists who perform endograft procedures to correct abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) can't afford to "scrimp" on their understanding of imaging if they are going to choose the right modality for their patients, according to a presentation at the 2007 International Symposium on Endovascular Technology (ISET). Other talks at the meeting focused on the safety of uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).

From staging to lymph node status: Studies look to refine cervical cancer diagnosis, treatment

Several new studies examined the roles of imaging and radiotherapy for cervical cancer staging and treatment. Canadian researchers sought a connection between interstitial fluid pressure and MR-derived kinetic-modeling parameters, while U.S. investigators in a national trial compared CT to MRI for presurgical assessment. A third study in Italy scrutinized lymph node involvement and preoperative chemoradiation.
