PET changes oncology management, study shows
By
Wayne Forrest
A multisite study in Australia has found that PET results can change treatment plans for cancer patients, as the modality provides more information on the extent, recurrence, and progression of the disease. The Australian PET Data Collection Project has collected data on whether the modality changed the management of patients with different types of cancer, such as ovarian cancer, metastatic melanoma, and colorectral cancer.

MR shows broad spectrum of findings in pregnant women with suspected appendicitis
By
Shalmali Pal
Although acute appendicitis is not terribly common in pregnant women, it does pose a diagnostic challenge because of anatomic and histologic changes that occur in these patients. CT carries a radiation risk while ultrasound, which is the established modality in this population, doesn't always deliver the whole story. Instead, Boston-based imagers have found success with MRI for evaluating the appendix, and more, in the gravid patient.

MRgFUS an option for many women seeking less invasive fibroid treatment
By
Shalmali Pal
Nearly a quarter of U.S. women suffer from clinically symptomatic uterine fibroids. While treatment options have moved beyond hysterectomy, researchers from New York City asked how many of these women are eligible for a less invasive treatment, such as MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS). A fair number, according to the group, but refining MRgFUS will open it up to a broader patient population.

3-tesla MRI sheds light on shading sign in endometriosis
By
Shalmali Pal
On T1-weighted MRI, endometrial cysts generally show high signal intensity. Unfortunately, so does other gynecological pathology. Differentiating endometrial cysts from other hemorrhage adnexal cysts is important for adequate treatment, according to Japanese researchers. They compared the MR manifestations of endometrial cysts using both 1.5- and 3-tesla MRI.

Fibroid arterial perfusion on aortography forecasts incomplete UAE treatment
By
Shalmali Pal
Interventionalists in the U.S. and France have identified several characteristics that can target patients who may require ovarian artery embolization (OAE) to ensure complete and successful fibroid treatment. They based their criteria on postuterine artery embolization (UAE) aortography results.

MR signal, nonperfusion drive long-term success of MR-guided focused US therapy
By
Shalmali Pal
BERLIN - At least 20% of a uterine fibroid treated with MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) therapy must be properly ablated to achieve long-lasting volume changes, according to Boston researchers who are experienced with the technique. The team presented its work this week at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) meeting.

UFE without standard aortography cuts radiation dose
By
Shalmali Pal
Because some women undergoing uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) may also require ovarian artery embolization (OAE), aortography is routinely performed to assess ovarian arterial supply. But eliminating this step, especially because less than 1% of UFE patients have significant collateral artery supply, could cut procedure-related radiation dose by 20%, according to a Washington, DC-based group.
