Water-fat separation sequence can't beat contrast MRI

When trying to find ways to cut contrast in patients scheduled for breast MRI, Italian researchers discovered that a noncontrast water-fat separation sequence was no better for evaluating tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy than standard contrast MRI. But noncontrast MRI still holds potential for monitoring therapy.

Screening mammography doesn't perform well in finding bilateral breast cancers, with a sensitivity rate of only 19%, according to a new study published online in

. The findings suggest that radiologists may need to look harder for contralateral cancers, or even use another modality such as breast MRI, Dutch researchers said.
