Norwegian researcher launches DBT study

A Norwegian researcher has launched a study that will compare the performance of digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) to conventional digital mammography, according to a Norwegian hospital.

The study, being conducted by Per Skaane, MD, of Oslo University Hospital Ullevaal, will begin this month; it is part of the Norwegian Breast Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP). Over the next two years the study will include up to 25,000 women between the ages of 50 and 69, Oslo University Hospital said. It will use Bedford, MA-based Hologic's Selenia Dimensions system in 2D digital mammography mode and in 2D plus 3D (breast tomosynthesis) mode.

The trial is designed to examine recall rates, false-positive scores, cancer detection rates, positive predictive values, and cancer characteristics. All of the mammography examinations will be interpreted by eight radiologists taking part in the study.

An advisory committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last month recommended approval of Hologic's premarket approval (PMA) application for Selenia Dimensions.
