CHICAGO - The obesity epidemic that continues to impact the U.S. can be felt in the radiology suite where the number of patients who can't be imaged because they are too large correlates with the overall bulging of Americans, according to research from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Dr. Raul Uppot presented the findings at the RSNA meeting on Wednesday.

CHICAGO - The RSNA show is serving as a platform for Toshiba America Medical Systems of Tustin, CA, to showcase the Aquilion 64 64-slice CT scanner that the company introduced earlier this year. The vendor is also highlighting new x-ray systems, gradient upgrades for its Vantage 1.5-tesla MRI scanner, and enhancements for its Aplio and Nemio ultrasound scanners.

MR may be sounder than sonography for catching fetal abnormalities

CHICAGO - When ultrasound fails to turn up fetal abnormalities, MRI may hold the answers, according to two presentations Monday at the RSNA meeting. Radiologists from Italy assessed the accuracy of MRI, in comparison to sonography, for detecting fetal malformations. Another group from Brazil did a prospective study comparing the two modalities, as well as the accuracy of MR fetal biometry.

Adult stem cell injections treat urinary incontinence

CHICAGO - Stem cells injected transurethrally under ultrasound guidance have shown promise in treating urinary incontinence. Initial research results by Dr. Ferdinand Frauscher and colleagues from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria show stem cells developed from the patient's own muscle can reconstruct and strengthen the lower urinary tract.
