While a focused musculoskeletal sonographic exam can identify most abnormalities, a protocol-based exam allowed for identification of 98% of symptomatic abnormalities in a recent retrospective study, according to researchers from the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor.

Ultrasound contrast advocates take aim at FDA black box warning

Advocates of ultrasound contrast have launched a grassroots lobbying effort to persuade the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to relax its recent black box warning on the use of two echocardiography contrast agents. The group believes the FDA warning was unnecessarily strident given the safety profile of ultrasound contrast, and that the warning could hamstring further clinical use of cardiac ultrasound contrast.

RSNA studies advance ultrasound's role in breast cancer detection

The preliminary results of the ACRIN 6666 trial show that ultrasound boosts cancer detection but at the risk of a higher false-positive rate. While the trial investigators continue to mine the trial data to find the best place for the modality in a screening setting, other researchers are using advanced imaging technology such as 3D and computer-aided analysis tools with ultrasound to enhance breast imaging.
