SonoSite launches iLook in U.S.

Hand-held ultrasound technology developer SonoSite is launching its iLook ultrasound platform, a series of three-pound ultrasound systems. The Bothell, WA-based vendor will initially offer two versions of the new platform: iLook 15 and iLook 25.

iLook 15 is designed for "quick-look" diagnostics in departments such as emergency, radiology, intensive care, and surgical recovery, while iLook 25 is targeted for physicians and nurses performing vascular access procedures, SonoSite said. Both all-digital models include a single fixed transducer and can be powered by battery or active current.

A "PDA-like" touch screen serves as the user interface. The systems will be priced between $12,500 and $15,500, SonoSite said.

iLook 15 is equipped to perform initial diagnoses for gallstones, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and pericardial or pleural effusions, the firm said. Available as of today in the U.S., iLook 15 will be released in Europe in September. SonoSite will begin deliveries in Asia, Canada, and the rest of the world following regulatory approvals, expected later this year and in early 2003, SonoSite said. The company anticipates that it will receive this approvals later this year and in early 2003.
