Report: Nuclear medicine patient visits drop in 2006

The total number of patient visits for nuclear medicine procedures declined in 2006, but shows a rebound in 2007, based on results for the first half of this year. The study by IMV Medical Information Division of Des Plaines, IL, estimates there were 15.2 million patient visits in the U.S. in 2006, compared with 17.2 million in 2005, a decline of 12% among 7,320 hospital and nonhospital sites.

NAS/IOM report sees hope and despair for nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine is at a crossroads in the U.S., according to a new report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The result of a 13-month study by a multidisciplinary team of experts, the report conveys optimism for future innovations and applications in nuclear medicine, but also reaches some sobering conclusions unless changes occur with research funding, radionuclide availability and cost, federal agency management, and the shortage of trained specialists and experts.

German-U.S. team successfully tests PET ring inside MRI system

German and U.S. researchers and engineers are showing early success with a prototype hybrid PET/MRI system, which features a full-ring PET insert installed inside a 7-tesla MR scanner. The team from the University of Tübingen, Burker BioSpin MRI, and Siemens Preclinical Solutions recently presented the results of its study on the performance of the hybrid PET/MRI small animal imaging system.
