Three-year study finds portable abdominal CT useful
By
Erik L. Ridley
CHICAGO - Although they yield image quality noticeably inferior to standard CT exams, portable abdominal CT studies can provide a valuable diagnostic alternative for patients too sick to travel to the radiology department, according to research presented Tuesday at the RSNA meeting.

MDCT imaging delivers higher organ doses than SDCT equivalent
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
CHICAGO - The use of multi-detector CT (MDCT) generates image sets of unparalleled diagnostic quality; however, obtaining these images using protocols equivalent to those used in single-detector CT (SDCT) acquisitions may be exposing patients to much higher radiation doses.

New 16-slice scanner tops Siemens RSNA highlights
CHICAGO - A new multislice CT scanner that collects 16 slices of data with a single rotation is among the highlights in the RSNA booth of Siemens Medical Solutions of Iselin, NJ. Called Somatom Sensation16, Siemens claims that the scanner provides up to 12 times the acquisition speed of existing four-slice scanners.

Preoperative CT predicts nonresectability of ovarian tumors
By
Leslie Farnsworth
CHICAGO - In ovarian cancer patients considered for secondary cytoreductive surgery, preoperative helical CT scanning has been proven a valuable tool in helping doctors predict tumor nonresectability.

Half-dose CT works fine for some neuro applications
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - For standard head CT applications such as initial screening, standard exposure protocols help ensure the best possible image quality when it's needed. But for non-critical applications such as routine follow-up, minimizing patients' radiation exposure makes more sense.

Los Angeles group brings MRI to whole-body screening
By
AuntMinnie.com staff writers
In a move to assuage concerns about radiation dose, a Southern California imaging center is introducing "radiation-free" whole-body screening using MRI rather than CT.

CT colonography performs very well in five-year study
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - In one of the largest studies to date, British radiologists have found CT colonography to be robust and reliable for the diagnosis of colon cancer in symptomatic patients. Extremely high sensitivity and specificity, except in the case of flat lesions, characterized the results of the five-year study.

E-Z-EM debuts virtual colonoscopy tagging agent
CHICAGO - Contrast agent developer E-Z-EM has introduced Tagitol, a tagging agent designed to improve visualization of the bowel during virtual colonoscopy exams.

ECG gating doesn't improve PE diagnosis, even with MDCT
By
Eric Barnes
CHICAGO - Electrocardiographic (ECG) gating of coronary CT images has become something of a wunderkind, owing to its ability to reduce motion artifacts. But except for a few small vessels nearest the heart, the technique does not improve the odds of diagnosing pulmonary embolism.

Contrast-enhanced CT proves highly predictive of aortic injuries
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
CHICAGO - A differential diagnosis of acute thoracic aortic injuries (ATAI) must be based on many factors. At the department of diagnostic imaging in Naples, Italy, Dr. Mariano Scaglione and his colleagues have achieved a 100% positive predictive value in assessing ATAI with contrast-enhanced helical CT. Scaglione presented their results at the RSNA meeting on Sunday.

Significant difference in radiation dose found between single- and multislice CT
By
Leslie Farnsworth
CHICAGO - A range of scan parameters for multislice CT can result in a large variation in radiation doses, according to a study presented Sunday at the annual RSNA meeting. In particular, technical parameters such as penumbra, may require more aggressive modifications of multislice scanning parameters in order to maintain radiation doses in the range of those currently found with single slice helical scanners.
