New CPT codes established for biomechanical CT

Medicare has established national coverage for biomechanical CT (CPT codes 0555T–0558T) for osteoporosis evaluation, according to O.N. Diagnostics.

Coverage implementation begins October 5, 2026, and is retroactively effective to January 1, 2024. Covered as a Bone Mass Measurement benefit, patient cost-sharing is waived, eliminating copay and deductible requirements for eligible Medicare beneficiaries, the company said.

Biomechanical CT (BCT) uses finite element analysis of hip- or spine-containing CT scans to measure bone density and strength and generate a fracture risk classification. The analysis can be applied to existing CT scans acquired for other indications, eliminating the need for a dedicated bone imaging exam, O.N. Diagnostics noted.

O.N. Diagnostics, founded by Tony Keaveny, PhD, of the University of California, Berkeley, has developed VirtuOst BCT, software cleared for use with BCT that automatically identifies osteoporosis, assesses fracture risk, and monitors treatment.
