A Maine couple is suing a radiologist for medical malpractice, accusing the radiologist of overlooking a significant warning sign of a stroke, according to a report published May 19 in the Portland Press Herald.
Jeffrey Sayward experienced a stroke in May 2023. A suit filed by both he and his wife, Kim Sayward, claims that nine hours before the stroke, an imaging exam showed a potential clot in a major artery carrying oxygen to his brain, but the reading radiologist, Eric J. Sax, MD, of Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, "did not mention it to other medical staff," the Herald reported.
Sayward is suing Sax for medical malpractice and negligence, the Herald noted. The suit is the "first known medical malpractice case filed in Maine's federal court against a non-governmental defendant," according to the Herald.
