Imatron continues to broaden the clinical applications of its electron beam tomography (EBT) technology. The South San Francisco, CA-based firm has received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance to market the colonographic capabilities of its EBT unit.
The approval allows Imatron to market the scanner to perform electron beam colonography, a minimally invasive procedure permitting visualization of the interior surface of the colon through a virtual "fly-through" mode, according to the vendor.
Imatron says the EBT system is the only CT scanner specifically cleared by the FDA for colonographic use.
