BrainLab wins patent victory

Image-guided therapy firm BrainLab of Munich, Germany, reported that the U.S. District Court in Denver dismissed a patent infringement lawsuit earlier this month that was brought by interventional technology firm Medtronic of Minneapolis and that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has upheld the decision.

Group uses electron beam CT for functional CT of kidneys

Many recent advances in CT have focused on creating high-resolution anatomical images from thin-section data. Functional research has largely been relegated to the sidelines. But a new experiment is promising in its use of functional CT to fill a real clinical need. Researchers measured the kidney's glomerular filtration rate using electron beam CT (EBCT) in an animal model.

Endoanal MRI and endoanal ultrasound demonstrate nearly equal capabilities for depicting external anal sphincter (EAS) defects in patients with fecal incontinence. A four-year, multicenter study from the Netherlands has found that both modalities are sensitive tools for preoperative assessment and both techniques can be used to depict surgically repairable anterior EAS defects.

CAD performs well in lung nodule detection

Use of computer-aided detection (CAD) technology helps improve the detection of lung nodules, according to two recent studies. Researchers in Canada evaluated CAD software for nodule detection in a lung cancer screening setting, while researchers in Italy found that CAD improved radiologists' performance in detecting lung nodules on multidetector-row (MDCT) exams.
