3D volume-rendered CT for pelvic fractures scales back imaging studies, not quality
By
Shalmali Pal
Diagnosing acetabular fracture, particularly in the trauma setting, is an elaborate process that involves multiple, time-consuming, radiation dose-heavy imaging studies. In an effort to simplify this complex imaging paradigm, radiologists and orthopedists at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, have proposed using 3D volume-rendered CT to assess acetabular fractures. Their protocol would reduce the number of imaging studies as well as the patient dose.

Disparate VC results suggest 2D/3D debate isn't over
By
Eric Barnes
Two recent studies have given new life to an old rivalry: 2D versus 3D primary reading of virtual colonoscopy data. In the first, ACRIN 6664 researchers found no significant difference in sensitivity between the two reading methods. In the second study, however, researchers at the University of Wisconsin in Madison found that primary 3D reading on a single system produced substantially better outcomes compared to 2D reading.

CTA predicts mortality, shows variable risk per vessel
By
Eric Barnes
Two major cautionary notes attached to coronary CT angiography (CTA) are the scarcity of literature proving a benefit in patients at risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its high radiation dose. Researchers at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center in Torrance, CA, believe they've gone a long way toward conquering both limitations with a low-dose 64-slice CT exam protocol and participation in several new studies suggesting a high prognostic value for CTA studies.
