Coronary CTA's time is now, according to Dowe
By
Eric Barnes
Coronary CT angiography's (CTA) ability to directly visualize the coronary arteries represents a huge medical advance capable of saving countless lives. Coronary CTA has put several other common tests on the path to obsolescence, but which patients benefit the most from coronary CTA? What about radiation dose? Dr. David Dowe of Atlantic Medical Imaging in Galloway, NJ, recently shared his experience, advice, and views of coronary CTA's place in the world.

Stark, raving mad? Physicians say Maryland's self-referral laws too broad
By
Kate Madden Yee
To the dismay of Maryland orthopedists, urologists, and emergency surgeons, a trial court in that state has upheld a self-referral law that virtually out-Starks the Stark law by banning nonradiologists from referring for in-office imaging. Nonradiologists argue that Maryland is overstepping the federal rule and that the law diminishes patient care by taking clinical procedures that are part of standard practice out of the hands of specialty doctors.

Anterior knee puncture approach technically on-target, well-tolerated
By
Shalmali Pal
Knee arthrography is generally used as the first-line imaging study before patients move on to MR or CT arthrography. The lateral patellofemoral approach is most commonly used for knee puncture, but it is a painful procedure and not always technically successful. Instead, French musculoskeletal radiologists have used an anterior approach for knee arthrography to good effect.

Coronary CTA study aims for lowest dose
By
Eric Barnes
A study from Switzerland concludes that low-dose prospectively gated coronary CT angiography (CTA) is both feasible and promising, but not without wrinkles. Relying on prospectively triggered gating and some of the lowest radiation doses yet achieved for prospectively gated coronary CTA, the team reported that 95% of all coronary segments achieved diagnostic image quality, but image quality was very dependent on heart rate.
