SPECT/CT enhances octreotide imaging
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
Indium-111-labeled octreotide imaging has shown greater accuracy than CT or MRI scans in detecting somatostatin receptor-positive neuroendocrine tumors. But anatomic localization of these tumors solely based on octreotide scans is problematic, so these procedures are usually performed with CT or MRI. A recent study suggests that SPECT/CT in octreotide imaging can provide important diagnostic information to clinicians that is unavailable with planar whole-body scans.

Temporal subtraction technique improves diagnostic accuracy, speed
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
Although bone scintigraphy is one of the more widely used nuclear medicine studies, interpreting the images is time-intensive, and detecting interval changes can be problematic. Now researchers from Chicago have developed a computerized temporal subtraction technique used between successive whole-body bone scans that may reduce physicians' reading time and improve their accuracy.

MRI proves tennis leg injuries are more than just a racket
By
Sydney Schuster
Tennis elbow, sure, but tennis leg? Yes, it exists, and it's not a reference to the endless gams on Maria Sharapova either. Instead, this injury of the medial head of the gastrocnemius can occur when the calf muscle is overstretched. Despite its moniker, tennis leg plagues nonathletes as well. However the injury happens, MRI -- and ultrasound to some extent -- are important for making the definitive diagnosis.

High signal on T2 MR warns of poor healing after Achilles tendon repair
By
Shalmali Pal
MRI can spot potential complications in Achilles tendon repair and is especially adept at pinpointing cysts or necrosis, according to researchers from Germany. In a study of 68 patients with partial or full-thickness tears of the Achilles tendon, they found that MRI was well-suited to monitor the healing and repair process, and that T2-weighted imaging could serve as an early indicator of outcome.

International imaging protocols for scaphoid trauma are all over the map
By
Shalmali Pal
Wrist injuries are quite commonplace, but there doesn't seem to be a common imaging protocol in place for assessing scaphoid fractures, according to an international survey conducted by U.K. researchers. And, despite the need for diagnostic urgency, the timing of wrist imaging exams is not set in stone.
