Too much information: fMRI indicates lack of discrimination at fault for senior forgetfulness

According to a new neuroimaging study, older people who experience forgetfulness may not necessarily have memory problems. Rather, they may be losing their ability to filter out irrelevant information and focus on the matter at hand. Researchers came to this conclusion after using functional MRI (fMRI) to assess the impact of normal aging on a cognitive mechanism known as "top-down modulation," which supports memory and attention.
