DTHI boosts US performance in hepatic imaging
By
Erik L. Ridley
NEW YORK CITY - A new dual-frequency nonlinear imaging mode called differential tissue harmonic imaging (DTHI) offers improvements over tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and fundamental ultrasound for hepatic applications, according to researchers from the U.S. and Taiwan. Dr. Flemming Forsberg presented the team's research Friday at the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) meeting.

Scottish study shows potential gadolinium-NSF link
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
VIENNA - A clutch of recently published research studies has demonstrated the possibility of a link between the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) in patients with renal insufficiency. The link was further explored in a presentation by Scottish researchers today at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR).

Group uses electron beam CT for functional CT of kidneys
By
Eric Barnes
Many recent advances in CT have focused on creating high-resolution anatomical images from thin-section data. Functional research has largely been relegated to the sidelines. But a new experiment is promising in its use of functional CT to fill a real clinical need. Researchers measured the kidney's glomerular filtration rate using electron beam CT (EBCT) in an animal model.

EBRT/brachytherapy prostate cancer combo shows long-term effectiveness
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
The pairing of external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) followed by brachytherapy has shown strong results in long-term relapse-free survival rates in prostate cancer patients, according to researchers of a new study. They found that low- and intermediate-risk patients experienced high disease-free survival rates with this treatment.

New tracer shows promise for PET/CT prostate imaging
By
Jonathan S. Batchelor
One in six men in the U.S. will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, according to recent data. Unfortunately, conventional imaging techniques are limited for detecting, staging, and restaging this carcinoma. But a study by scientists at Emory University in Atlanta and researchers in Japan finds that a new radiotracer shows promse in evaluating and staging prostate cancer.

Multiple MR protocols pose triple threat in prostate cancer screening
By
Shalmali Pal
Prostate cancer screening with a combination of MR techniques can accurately detect and localize prostate cancer -- and possibly avoid needless biopsy, according to researchers from Tokyo. They used three different image interpretation protocols and found that each one offered something unique in prostate cancer detection.

Lesion-guided prostate biopsy bests random biopsy methods
By
Erik L. Ridley
Lesion-directed prostate biopsies yield higher cancer detection rates than random biopsies, regardless of the prostate-specific antigen level, according to a five-year study published in the latest edition of the
Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine
. Researchers from Taiwan used transrectal ultrasound to compare sonographically suspicious lesion-directed biopsies and random biopsies in 518 patients referred for prostate biopsies.
