Adding CAD to virtual colonoscopy saves lives and money
By
Eric Barnes
Adding computer-aided detection (CAD) increases the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of VC screening, according to a new model-based analysis. Most of the gains resulted from the use of CAD with inexperienced readers, but even with experienced readers VC cost-effectiveness improved substantially.

Computer pen bests mouse for 3D image segmentation
By
Erik L. Ridley
A computer pen can outperform a conventional mouse for performing 3D image segmentation, according to research from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

ACRIN study: Bigger images, slower pace improve VC sensitivity
By
Eric Barnes
The best virtual colonoscopy readers don't rush through their cases, and they don't try to squeeze more than one image on the monitor at a time. But sticking to their preferred reading method doesn't help them find more polyps, according to a new analysis of data from the National CT Colonography Trial (ACRIN 6664).

Medicsight parent gets NYSE listing notice
By
AuntMinnie.com staff writers
The parent company of computer-aided detection software developer Medicsight reported that it has received a notice that it is out of compliance with listing rules for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Alternext U.S. exchange.

CMS rejects case for virtual colonoscopy reimbursement
By
Brian Casey
Proponents of virtual colonoscopy suffered a setback this week when the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposal rejecting federal reimbursement for VC screening for colorectal cancer.

ACRIN VC trial shows only small differences in bowel preps
By
Eric Barnes
There was no runaway winner among the three bowel preps used in the recently published National CT Colonography Trial (ACRIN 6664), but there were certainly differences in how they performed, according to a research team from Arizona.

Virtual colonoscopy beginners do better with 3D data
By
Eric Barnes
Novice virtual colonoscopy readers detect more polyps reading 3D endoluminal datasets of electronically cleansed data compared to 2D images. But experienced readers aren't daunted by either 2D datasets or fecal residues, turning in a similar performance regardless of the reading environment.

Confocal microscopy could reduce polypectomies
By
Eric Barnes
Optical colonoscopy could become safer, and polypectomies fewer, with the advent of a supermagnifying endoscope that can distinguish between benign hyperplastic lesions and potentially dangerous adenomas without removing them from the patient.

Need for VC colon screening trumps physician turf battles
By
Eric Barnes
SAN FRANCISCO - Virtual colonoscopy is safe and cost-effective and should be implemented for widespread colorectal cancer screening despite the inevitable turf struggles that arise between physician subspecialties, according to the radiologist who led the multicenter National CT Colonography Trial.

Ultrasound screens for pancreatic cancer in high-risk populations
By
Eric Barnes
SAN FRANCISCO - Ultrasound detected small pancreatic cancers even CT and MRI couldn't visualize in a novel Dutch screening program aimed at high-risk patients with a family history of the disease. The researchers hope to transform their pilot study into a multicenter trial aimed at finding pancreatic cancer in high-risk patients while it's still resectable.

MR colonography separates benign from malignant colonic strictures
By
Eric Barnes
Dynamic contrast-enhanced MR colonography can readily distinguish benign from malignant strictures of the colon, according to Danish researchers. They said the technique could solve a diagnostic dilemma in patients with suspected colorectal cancer lesions that prevent them from undergoing conventional colonoscopy before surgery.

Study warns VC could leave high-risk polyps unresected
By
Eric Barnes
Researchers who analyzed a large database of resected colon polyps concluded that the American College of Radiology's policy of ignoring diminutive polyps detected at virtual colonoscopy could lead to as many as 30% of patients with "high-risk findings" being read as normal on VC exams.
