Emergency department (ED) radiologists are crediting speech recognition technology with a dramatic reduction in report turnaround times at a level I trauma center. Final reports for "routine" procedures are being generated in an hour or less, compared to 3.6 days before implementation of a multiphase process improvement project.

Coronary CT angiography is proving to be reliable for triaging chest pain patients in the emergency room. Its high negative predictive value for ruling out acute coronary syndrome suggests that patients with negative results and negative cardiac enzymes can be safely discharged. But most are still admitted for observation, at great expense to the U.S. healthcare system.
