Multicenter trial supports CTPA versus V/Q for PE

A study in the December 19 Journal of the American Medical Association confirms that CT pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is a reliable alternative to ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scans for ruling out pulmonary embolism (PE). CT doesn't miss clinically significant blood clots in the lungs, and can also help reveal other potential causes of the patients' symptoms, the authors report.

Computer-aided detection (CAD) technology offers a relatively high detection rate for detecting lung nodules on CT scans, according to two studies presented at last month's RSNA 2007 meeting in Chicago. The first analyzed the performance of a CAD scheme for detecting lung nodules of various sizes and patterns on thin-slice CT studies, while the second study looked at CAD's effect on the performance of thoracic radiologists for detecting lung nodules.
