New method reduces scatter in portable x-ray systems

Researchers at Emory University's Winship Cancer Institute and GE Global Research are collaborating on a software-based method for reducing scatter in portable systems. Tested on thorax phantom images, the algorithm reduced the x-ray signal by 50% to 100% without loss of image quality.

Biological 'fingerprints' help identify mislabeled chest x-rays

Digital tomosynthesis beats standard DR in finding chest lesions

Early clinical results with a digital radiography (DR)-based tomosynthesis system indicate that it outperforms conventional digital x-ray in detecting pulmonary nodules. Duke University researchers found that tomosynthesis had triple the sensitivity of standard DR for detecting nodules large enough to require further diagnostic workup.

Surrogate organs stand in for lung tumors during fluoroscopic tracking

Working from the premise that other more visible anatomic features move in concert with lung tumors, researchers have developed a computer algorithm that uses these visible features as tumor stand-ins. In a feasibility study, the method localized the tumor position to an accuracy of within 1 mm and 2.5 mm.
