Radiation therapy for lung cancer patients may affect normal lung tissue
By
Eric Barnes
SAN FRANCISCO - A PET imaging study presented at this week's Chest 2000 conference found that radiation therapy for lung cancer may induce changes in untreated lung tissues. Follow-up studies will be needed to determine what PET is actually finding, but the modality could play an important monitoring role in radiation therapy.

CT scan clarifies extent of emphysema for chest physicians
By
Shalmali Pal
SAN FRANCISCO - Compared with other obstructive pulmonary diseases, the course of emphysema remains a bit hazy. Even among heavy smokers, just 40% will develop severe emphysema, say presenters at the Chest 2000 conference this week. But CT scanning has shed new light on the disease by quantifying its severity and determining which patients would benefit from lung volume reduction surgery.

Chest specialists weigh pros and cons of CT screening for lung cancer
By

SAN FRANCISCO - CT can detect smaller lung malignancies and thus improve survival rates, but do the benefits of early screening outweigh the risks? Two clinicians debated the merits and the drawbacks of lung cancer screening Monday at Chest 2000, sponsored by the American College of Chest Physicians.
