Fleischner Society updates thoracic imaging glossary of terms

The Fleischner Society has updated its glossary of terms for thoracic imaging, according to a special report published February 27 in Radiology and a statement released by the RSNA.

The latest glossary replaces previous glossaries published in 1984, 1996, and 2008. It includes new terms of clinical importance and concepts that have emerged, discards others that have become obsolete, and addresses terms where usage has either changed or become inconsistent to a degree that they warranted a new definition. Also, compared with the previous version, the number of images in the current version is increased.

The authors wrote that the provided definitions should be understood as a consensus proposal rather than strict rules. They added that the glossary aims to establish standardization of terminology for thoracic radiology and facilitate communications between radiologists and clinicians.
