The relative attenuation of cerebral vascular structures in CT helps radiologists diagnose a variety of problems, such as hematoma, thrombosis, and ischemia. At the 2001 RSNA meeting, Dr. Damon DeTeso from the New England Medical Center in Boston presented a study of 28 patients who underwent head CT along with a blood profile.

At the department of diagnostic imaging in Naples, Italy, Dr. Mariano Scaglione and his colleagues have achieved a 100% positive predictive value in assessing ATAI with contrast-enhanced helical CT.
