Cardiac implants may be safer in MRI than thought
By
Brian Casey
A new study published February 23 in the
New England Journal of Medicine
indicates that implantable cardiac devices may be safer in the MRI environment than previously thought. In more than 1,000 patients who received nonthoracic scans, researchers found no device or lead failures, even with devices that were not certified for use with MR imaging.

CT better than echo for aortic annulus before TAVR
By
Eric Barnes
Aortic valve replacement may be more accurate when measurements are made with CT versus echocardiography, according to a January 24 paper in
Academic Radiology
. Coronary CT angiography measurements correlated well with 3D echocardiography results by most measures, making CT a suitable replacement for echo in planning transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) surgery.

Coronary calcium predicts events, death, in younger adults
By
Eric Barnes
If CT scans detect any amount of coronary artery calcium in people between the ages of 32 and 46 years, they have an exponentially higher risk of cardiovascular events and death later in life, according to a February 8 paper in
JAMA Cardiology
. Developing a screening strategy for younger people at risk should be a priority.

Machine-learning analysis of heart motion predicts survival
By
Eric Barnes
A machine-learning survival model based on 3D cardiac motion predicts outcomes beyond conventional risk factors in patients with pulmonary hypertension, according to a new study from the U.K. and Singapore. Semiautomated analysis of the cine MR images could potentially be used to guide patient management.
