By
Frances Rylands-Monk
Adding ultrasound to mammography screening detects more early invasive breast cancer and probably reduces mortality, according to a 4 November study in the journal
Lancet
. The Japanese trial is thought to be the first of its kind in a large, randomized, multicenter population with a focus on younger, average-risk women.

Monday, November 30 | 10:20 a.m.-10:30 a.m. | RC215-10 | Arie Crown TheaterWomen who carry BRCA genes benefit from yearly screening with both MRI and mammography. Because these women can still present with interval cancers, would adding automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) to the mix find more cancers earlier?

DBT finds 54% more cancers than mammography
By
Kate Madden Yee
Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) finds 54% more cancers than 2D mammography and reduces recall rates by almost 20%, according to a new study published in
Radiology
. Even better, the technology identifies lesions in dense breast tissue, which mammography tends to miss.

Novel breast MRI technique could reduce biopsy rate
By
Wayne Forrest
A shorter noncontrast-enhanced breast MRI protocol might help reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies by gathering additional information about suspicious lesions found on screening mammography while cutting scanning times, according to a new study published online September 29 in

ASCO BCS: Breast MRI useful for average-risk women, too
By
Kate Madden Yee
SAN FRANCISCO - Breast MRI is used as an adjunct to mammography for screening women at high risk of breast cancer, but could it be used in average-risk women as well to find cancer earlier? The answer is a resounding yes, according to research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual Breast Cancer Symposium (ASCO BCS).

Does preoperative breast MRI really benefit patients?
By
Kate Madden Yee
Breast MRI is a sensitive modality that finds cancers mammography or ultrasound can miss. But when it's used preoperatively in women who have already been diagnosed, it may cause more trouble than it's worth -- such as longer wait times for surgery and unnecessary mastectomies, according to a new study published in
JAMA Oncology
.
