CHICAGO - A study of radiology reports generated by speech recognition software at a prestigious U.S. academic medical center found that even with fully trained system users the technology was introducing significant errors in almost one out of five signed, final reports. The study authors presented their findings at the 2006 RSNA meeting.

US-guided percutaneous placement of PBI balloon catheter is safe, efficient
CHICAGO - Data from a small series of patients suggest that percutaneous ultrasound-guided placement of a partial-breast irradiation (PBI) balloon is a safe and efficient option to whole-breast radiation following lumpectomy for treatment of early-stage breast cancer, according to researchers who presented their findings Wednesday at the 2006 RSNA meeting.

CHICAGO - An error-tracking system developed at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center can quantitatively measure radiology residents' performance and serve as an educational tool, according to its Cicero, IL-based creators. Researchers in Taiwan also focused on residents' performance, but used teaching case files to help reduce misreads.

Overdiagnosis may plague CT lung screening results, especially in women

CHICAGO - A just-concluded five-year lung cancer screening study found that tumor doubling times can be very long in nearly a quarter of female patients, suggesting that overdiagnosis may be a stronger factor than previously believed, at least in women.

Survey says: Domestic teleradiology preferred by referrers

CHICAGO - U.S.-trained and board-certified radiologists aren't the only ones who disapprove the use of foreign-trained, overseas radiologists to provide diagnostic imaging interpretative services for the U.S. healthcare market. Given a choice, referring physicians also express a strong preference for domestic radiology services, according to survey results presented at the 2006 RSNA meeting.

Pre-embolization sperm motility predicts fertility after varicocele treatment
CHICAGO - Men who have maintained relatively high sperm motility despite the development of varicoceles may improve fertility by undergoing spermatic vein embolization, according to a team of German interventional radiologists. The researchers used Doppler ultrasound to monitor the treatment results of 223 men who underwent endovascular embolization.

Automated breast US proves to be sensitive screening tool in dense breasts

CHICAGO - Automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) can detect new breast lesions as well as confirm findings previously spotted on mammography, according to the phase II results of a screening trial at the Elizabeth Wende Breast Clinic in Rochester, NY. Lead investigator Dr. Stamatia Destounis presented her group's findings Wednesday at the RSNA meeting.
