Residents' on-call CT reads comparable to faculty's final reports

At the 2007 RSNA meeting in Chicago, Dr. Matthew Chan of Detroit's Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Detroit Medical Center presented findings from a study he and colleagues performed to evaluate on-call radiology resident CT interpretation performance as compared with faculty radiologists' final reports. The study was conducted using RADPEER, a system designed by the American College of Radiology (ACR) that allows peer review to be performed during the routine interpretation of current images.

Radiologists interested in changing jobs share their concerns. The worry is merited, as the job market for diagnostic radiologists has fluctuated dramatically in the past decade, according to researchers Jonathan Sunshine, Ph.D., and Dr. C. Douglas Maynard. They recently published the results of their survey of vacancies in academic departments.

is the debut medical thriller by Dr. Michael Esposito, a neuroradiologist in private practice in Tampa, FL. After 15 years in radiology, Esposito was looking for a creative outlet and decided to try writing fiction. His main character is also a neuradiologist who's part of a malpractice scam that involves manipulating patient images to "create" missed diagnoses, then cashing in on the settlements.

But how much do these errors affect patient care? According to a study by researchers at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ, patients and attendings needn't worry: interpretations by on-call radiology residents can be trusted.
