Lean principles and ergonomics aid imaging management

Diagnostic imaging practices have become increasingly difficult to manage, largely due to hard-hitting reimbursement cuts from the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA). At the same time, high rates of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) among imaging professionals are costing employers billions of dollars a year. Blending ergonomics with lean process improvement helps reduce injuries and increase productivity, while improving the quality of patient care and the patient care experience.

Florida fraud case: A harbinger of increased federal scrutiny?

When the U.S. Department of Justice announced on April 14 that it had reached a $7 million settlement with a Florida radiologist to resolve allegations of healthcare fraud, radiologists across the country took notice. The buzz in the Boca Raton, FL, case has centered on the question of whether it was a one-shot deal -- or whether it represents a trend toward increased federal enforcement of laws prohibiting fraud and kickbacks.

Ultrasound scan protocols for nonmedical personnel offer value

Training nonmedical personnel to perform simple volume ultrasound scan protocols can produce effective results, according to researchers from the University of Vermont School of Medicine. They developed four protocols to scan the thyroid, gallbladder, kidney, and female transabdominal pelvis. To test the protocols, they had volunteers without imaging experience undergo a 20- to 30-minute training session for each protocol.
