Pennsylvania passes medical imaging licensure bill

The Pennsylvania Senate has approved legislation that would create a statewide licensure process for medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals.

Senate Bill 1334, sponsored by Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver, R-Northumberland, and Sen. Nick Pisciottano, D-Allegheny, passed 45 to 5 and now moves to the state House of Representatives. The bill would establish licensing standards for medical imaging professionals, including completion of accredited education programs, passing nationally recognized examinations, and maintaining competency through continuing education.

Pennsylvania currently regulates facilities and equipment through the state Department of Environmental Protection but does not license individuals who operate radiation-producing equipment.
