Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in radiology are key not only to recruiting and retaining staff but also to caring for a diverse patient population. In this podcast, AuntMinnie.com spoke with Florence Doo, MD, of the University of Maryland; Efren Flores, MD, of Mass General Brigham; and Elizabeth McFarland, MD, of Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology about the current DEI legislative environment and how radiologists can best support DEI efforts, both within their departments and in the broader political arena. The three recently published a research letter on the topic in the Journal of the American College of Radiology with co-authors Jordan Perchik, MD; Nicole Hindman, MD; Judy Yee, MD; and Marques Bradshaw, MD.
"As we face workforce challenges including recruitment, we have an opportunity to redefine our radiology workplace culture while navigating the local politico-legal DEI landscape to include mentoring diverse talent, advocating for equitable hiring and promotion practices, and ensuring department support matches values." -- Florence Doo, MD.
"The current [legislative] environment has created a need to reposition DEI to ensure that it fosters a sense of belonging among patients and the radiology workforce at all levels." -- Efren Flores, MD.
"Understanding the impact of anti-DEI legislation is essential in order to support diverse and inclusive environments and to promote a resilient culture of belonging, purpose, and well-being for the pipeline of future doctors and the patients they serve." -- Elizabeth McFarland, MD.
