FDA issues draft social media, Internet guidance

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published two draft guidances for the medical industry on the use of social media and Internet communication for medical devices and prescription drugs.

The first provides guidance on presenting risk and benefit information for prescription drugs and medical devices on Internet/social media platforms with character space limitations such as Twitter and the paid search results links on Google and Yahoo. The second offers guidance on correcting independent third-party misinformation about prescription drugs and medical devices using Internet/social media platforms.

The guidances were designed with patients in mind, according to the FDA.
